Driving Theory & Test Support in Penicuik

Clarity, practice, and guidance to help you pass with confidence
Passing your theory or practical driving test can feel like a big step, especially if you’re not sure what to expect. Test support is included throughout the learning journey to make sure you’re not just ready but confident when test day comes.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or need a boost after a previous attempt, this page explains what’s involved and how lessons are built to help.
When Is the Driving Theory Test Required?
You’ll need to pass the theory test before booking your practical test. This applies if:
- You’re applying for a full UK driving licence for the first time
- You’re switching from a different vehicle category, like bike to car
If you already have a full car licence and are switching from manual to automatic, there’s no need to retake the theory test.
How the Theory Test Works
The theory test is taken at a DVSA test centre and includes two parts:
- Multiple-Choice Questions
You’ll answer 50 questions based on the Highway Code, road signs, and safe driving habits. A short video question is included to test real-world judgement. You need at least 43 correct answers to pass. - Hazard Perception Test
You’ll watch 14 video clips showing everyday road scenarios and click when you spot developing hazards. A score of 44 out of 75 is required to pass.
The cost of the theory test is currently £23.
